Eastern Skunk Cabbage
An Unsung Wonder of the Swamps

Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) For those that have grown up around these plants, avoiding them for their repulsive odor and certainly not examining them during the dead of winter, the Eastern Skunk Cabbage is little more than an uninteresting swamp weed.   Indeed, they receive few accolades for being one of the most specialized and cleverly-adapted plants in their range.

Profile of the Autumn Olive
New England's Native Flora Under Attack

Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) Beautiful, resilient, resour-ceful... and a merciless pirate of New England's biomes.  The Autumn Olive arrived from Asia hungry to plunder the habitats of indigenous plants.  Field Journals takes a look at this invasive species, examining the reasons for its success so far from home and the impact of its presence in New England.
